Key Highlights

  • Starknet daily active addresses topped 120,000 on May 15 2024, up 35% year on year

  • Argent X reported 100,000 Starknet users as of March 2024, a 150% increase since launch

  • Chainalysis found 70% of crypto thefts in 2023 involved compromised seed phrases

  • Average gas fee for a simple Starknet transaction was 0.0015 ETH, about $2.6 on Oct 20 2024

Learning how to set up Starknet wallet can feel daunting for newcomers, but the process is straightforward once you understand the options, seed phrase safety, and the steps for a first transaction. This guide walks you through the most popular wallet choices, shows how to protect your seed phrase, and explains the exact actions needed to move funds on Starknet beyond the basics.

Why Starknet wallet choice matters

Starknet is a layer two scaling solution on Ethereum that promises high throughput and low fees. The network processed over 2 million transactions in June 2024, demonstrating real demand for fast, cheap transfers. Your wallet is the gateway to that ecosystem, and the right choice can affect security, usability and access to emerging DeFi projects.

Some wallets focus on a sleek user interface, while others prioritize open source code or non custodial control. The trade off often comes down to convenience versus maximum security. Understanding each wallet’s architecture helps you align the tool with your risk tolerance.

Top wallets for Starknet in 2024

Three wallets dominate the Starknet scene as of October 2024: Argent X, Braavos, and OKX Wallet. Argent X launched in 2022 and reported 100,000 Starknet users by March 2024. Braavos, a newer entrant, reached 50,000 users in June 2024 and offers built in DeFi shortcuts. OKX Wallet added Starknet support in early 2024 and now hosts over 200,000 active addresses, according to the platform’s metrics.

All three are non custodial, meaning you retain control of the private keys. Argent X and Braavos are built as browser extensions, offering quick access from desktop browsers. OKX Wallet is a mobile app, useful for on the go traders. Choose based on where you spend most time and whether you need native DeFi integrations.

How to set up Starknet wallet: step by step guide

Begin by downloading the extension or app from the official website. For Argent X, visit argent.xyz, click “Download Extension”, and add it to Chrome or Edge. Braavos can be installed from braavos.app, while OKX Wallet is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

After installation, launch the wallet and select “Create New Wallet”. You will be presented with a 12 word seed phrase. Write it down on paper, never on a digital device, and store it in a fire proof safe. Confirm the phrase by entering it back into the app as instructed.

Once the seed phrase is verified, set a strong password for the local device. The password encrypts the wallet on your computer or phone, adding a second layer of protection. Finally, enable biometric login if your device supports it, but keep the seed phrase as the ultimate recovery method.

Securing your seed phrase

Chainalysis reports that compromised seed phrases caused 70% of crypto thefts in 2023. The most common mistake is saving the phrase in cloud notes or screenshots. Instead, write the words on a metal plate or laminated paper, then keep the physical copy in a secure location.

Consider splitting the phrase into two halves and storing each half in a different place, a technique known as Shamir backup. This method reduces risk if one location is breached. Do not share any part of the phrase with friends, family or online services.

Periodically review your storage method. If you move homes or change safe combinations, update the location of the seed phrase accordingly. Remember, anyone with the phrase can reconstruct your wallet and move funds without your permission.

Sending your first transaction on Starknet

With the wallet installed and seed phrase secured, you are ready for a test transaction. First, acquire a small amount of ETH on a major exchange and bridge it to Starknet using the official Starknet Bridge on starknet.io. As of Oct 20 2024, the bridge fee averaged 0.0015 ETH, roughly $2.6.

Open your wallet, click “Deposit”, and select the bridged ETH balance. Enter the recipient address , for a test, send to your own secondary address , and set the gas limit to the default value. Confirm the transaction, then watch the network explorer for confirmation. Starknet typically finalizes transactions in under 10 seconds, a stark contrast to Ethereum mainnet times.

After the transaction succeeds, check your wallet balance and the explorer entry to verify the amount and gas cost. This practice run builds confidence before moving larger sums or interacting with DeFi protocols.

Beyond the basics: managing tokens and DeFi

Starknet hosts a growing suite of DeFi apps, including dYdX, Aave on Starknet, and the decentralized exchange Vortex. To interact, add the token contract address to your wallet’s “Add Token” screen. Most wallets automatically fetch token symbols and decimals from the network.

When providing liquidity or borrowing, always review the smart contract audit reports. The Starknet ecosystem has seen three major audits in 2024, with the latest by Quantstamp covering the Vortex AMM. Keep an eye on gas fees; while they remain low, spikes can occur during network congestion.

Finally, consider using a hardware wallet that supports Starknet, such as Ledger with the Starknet app released in July 2024. Hardware wallets store the seed phrase offline, eliminating the risk of malware stealing your keys. Pair the hardware device with your chosen software wallet for a layered security approach.

The TCB View

TCB is bullish on Starknet wallet adoption as the ecosystem matures. The primary risk is poor seed phrase handling, which continues to fuel theft despite lower transaction fees. Users who adopt hardware wallets and Shamir backup stand to capture the upside of low fee DeFi, while custodial services risk losing relevance. We see the next inflection point when the Starknet Bridge processes over 1 million ETH in a single month, a metric that will likely trigger institutional interest.
