What This Index Measures

The TCB DeFi Pulse tracks the percentage change in total value locked (TVL) across all decentralised finance protocols over the past seven days, as measured by DefiLlama. It is the single fastest read on whether capital is moving into or out of DeFi.

A rising Pulse means new capital is entering the ecosystem, either from fresh investment or rotation out of centralised venues. A falling Pulse signals capital outflows, which often run ahead of broader market stress or line up with protocol level risk events.

TVL is denominated in USD and aggregates every chain, including Ethereum, Solana, BNB Chain, Arbitrum, and Base. Price appreciation in the underlying assets also lifts TVL, so the Pulse is best read alongside the absolute TVL figure and the overall direction of the market.

How TCB Computes It

pulse = (TVL_today / TVL_7d_ago − 1) × 100
TVL series is pulled from the DefiLlama historicalChainTvl endpoint and refreshed once per day.
Weekly delta is measured against the data point from exactly eight entries earlier in the daily series.
Monthly delta is included for trend context and shown in the stat tiles above.

Data source: DefiLlama, the most comprehensive cross chain TVL aggregator, covering more than 3,000 protocols across 200 plus chains. Computed every morning at 6 AM UTC.

Interpretation Guide

Above +5% Strong Growth. Capital is flowing aggressively into DeFi, usually driven by new yield opportunities, a major protocol launch, or broad crypto momentum.
+1% to +5% Mild Growth. Healthy net inflows. DeFi TVL is expanding at a sustainable pace.
−1% to +1% Flat. Capital is neither entering nor leaving at meaningful scale. Watch for a directional shift in the days ahead.
−5% to −1% Mild Contraction. Capital is leaving DeFi. Often reflects profit taking, rotation into stablecoins, or protocol specific events.
Below −5% Strong Contraction. Significant capital outflows. Historically lines up with major exploits, regulatory pressure, or sharp drawdowns in ETH and BTC.
