How to Set Up a Ledger Hardware Wallet: Step by Step (2026)

Summary: A Ledger hardware wallet keeps your crypto offline and out of reach of hackers. This step by step guide covers unboxing, setup, seed phrase backup, and your first transaction — plus the rules you must follow to avoid losing everything.

Before You Start: Unboxing Check

Always buy a Ledger directly from ledger.com or an authorized reseller. Never buy second-hand. Before opening, check that the tamper-evident seal on the box is intact. If the seal is broken or missing, do not use the device — return it immediately. A compromised device could have a pre-loaded seed phrase, meaning someone else controls your funds.

Step 1: Download Ledger Live

  1. Go to ledger.com/ledger-live on your computer.
  2. Download the official Ledger Live application for your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux).
  3. Verify the download using the checksum provided on the site if you are security-conscious.
  4. Install and open Ledger Live.

Step 2: Connect Your Ledger Device

  1. Connect your Ledger to your computer via the included USB cable.
  2. The device will display a welcome screen. Press both buttons simultaneously to begin.
  3. In Ledger Live, click “Get started” and select your device model (Ledger Nano S Plus, Nano X, or Flex).

Step 3: Set Up a New Device

  1. On your Ledger device, select “Set up as new device.” Do not select “Restore from recovery phrase” unless you are recovering an existing wallet.
  2. Choose a PIN code: 4–8 digits. Do not use your birthday or any obvious number. Confirm it.
  3. Ledger Live will walk you through a “genuine check” to confirm your device is authentic Ledger hardware.

Step 4: Write Down Your 24-Word Seed Phrase

This is the most important step. Your 24-word recovery phrase is the master key to all your crypto.

  1. The device will display 24 words, one at a time.
  2. Write each word on the recovery sheet included in the box — use a pen, write clearly.
  3. Double-check each word against the device screen.
  4. The device will then ask you to confirm several words to verify you wrote them down correctly.
Critical Rule: Never enter your 24-word seed phrase into any website, app, software, or online form. Never photograph it. Never type it into your phone, computer, or cloud storage. Ledger will NEVER ask for your seed phrase — anyone who does is stealing your crypto. The seed phrase is only ever entered on the physical Ledger device itself when recovering a wallet.

Step 5: Store Your Recovery Phrase Safely

  • Write it on paper — two copies minimum.
  • Store copies in different physical locations.
  • Consider a metal backup plate (e.g., Cryptosteel) for fire and water resistance.
  • Tell a trusted person where to find it in case of emergency (without showing them the words themselves).

Step 6: Add Crypto Apps to Your Ledger

  1. In Ledger Live, go to “My Ledger” in the left sidebar.
  2. Connect and unlock your device.
  3. Under the “App catalog,” find Bitcoin and click “Install.” Do the same for Ethereum or any other asset you want to hold.
  4. Each coin requires its own app on the device. Apps do not store funds — they just enable transactions for that coin.

Step 7: Add Accounts and Receive Your First Coins

  1. In Ledger Live, click “Accounts” then “Add account.”
  2. Select Bitcoin (or your chosen asset) and follow the prompts. Your device must be connected and unlocked.
  3. Once the account is added, click “Receive” to get your Bitcoin address.
  4. Verify the address on your Ledger device screen — always confirm addresses on the device, not just on your computer screen.
  5. Send a small test amount first before transferring large sums.

Step 8: Test That You Understand Recovery

Before storing significant value, understand how recovery works: if your device is lost or broken, you use your 24-word seed phrase to restore your wallet on a new Ledger (or compatible wallet). Your coins are on the blockchain — not on the physical device. The device is just a secure key holder.

Key Rules to Remember

  • Buy only from official sources.
  • Never enter seed phrase anywhere except a physical device during recovery.
  • Always verify transaction addresses on the device screen.
  • Keep your PIN secret — 3 wrong PIN attempts will wipe the device (recoverable with your seed phrase).
  • Keep Ledger Live updated for security patches.
